Travel insurance provides the necessary support, advice and covers expenses incurred as a result of a sudden
illness or accident (such as medical expenses or transportation). It also helps in the event of a change of
flight, lost, damaged or delayed luggage, civil liability or legal assistance abroad.
What to do if something happens during the trip
If something unexpected happens during the trip, which affects the further course of your trip or if there is an
accident
case in which you or your travel companions have suffered, then travel insurance can be very useful. By yourself
anyway
the most important thing, of course, is to be careful and safe in any situation, but if we look at it from a
travel perspective
filing an insurance case to receive compensation from your insurer, then the most important thing to consider
it is imperative to contact your insurer immediately to inform them of the situation and listen
specialist on how to proceed. That way you will be sure that you are doing everything correctly and you will be
able to receive a reward from your own
insurer.
- Make sure of your safety: First and foremost, ensure your safety and that of the people around you, so
that it doesn't happen again
what's wrong Contact local emergency services immediately if necessary.
- Contact your insurer: Contact your insurance company's support as soon as possible
center. Almost all insurers provide telephone assistance 24 hours a day, also from abroad, and can provide
immediate advice on how to proceed. It is worth saving in your phone in advance before you go on a trip
the insurer's telephone number for inquiries, if the Internet is not available, to find the number on the
insurer's website.
- Get information about the incident: Gather as much information as possible about the incident,
regardless of
what happened. Get all possible information and documents from the hospital or doctor if it was urgent
the medical care you received. If there was a theft, submit a report to the local police, you can additionally
take photos of the scene. The more information you have, the easier it will be to file a claim
and receive compensation.
- Document expenses: Keep detailed records, receipts and invoices for all expenses related to the
accident. That
could include hospital bills, medications, transportation costs, basic necessities, hotels
costs and so on. If your personal belongings were stolen, state what was stolen and state the item
the approximate value.
- Submit a claim: When you are safe and have all the information you need, submit a claim to your
to the insurance company. Most insurance companies allow claims to be submitted online, by phone or
sending an email. Submit all necessary information and documents as soon as possible.
- Cooperate and follow up: Cooperate with your insurance company after filing a claim. For them
may require additional information or documents that you can help provide to make it as easy as possible
compensation review process, as well as regularly follows the progress of his compensation case himself.
- Right to appeal: If you are not satisfied with the insurer's decision regarding your claim, you have
the right to dispute it.
Try it first
solve it with the insurer itself and if, even after repeated communication, you have the feeling that the matter
has not been settled correctly,
you can file a dispute for the
Ombudsman.
Remember that the risks covered and the process for submitting a claim depend on the specific policy and the
specific
insurer. Before starting your trip, always familiarize yourself with the related documents of your policy so that
understand exactly what is included in the policy coverage and what are the exclusions. If you need to supplement
the policy coverage, sure
contact your insurer and they will certainly help you supplement the policy with the necessary, just in case
you omitted something when initially drawing up the policy or, for example, added or changed it as the trip
approached
your travel plans.
Can EHIC replace travel insurance
The short answer is no, EHIC cannot replace travel insurance as it has a completely different function. EVAK and
travel
insurance do not replace each other, but complement each other. The European Health Insurance Card, or EHIC, is a
free plastic card that certifies that the holder is a socially
insured person from the EU, EEA country or Switzerland. The holder of this card is entitled to the same amount of
necessary or emergency medical care during a temporary stay in another EU, EEA country or Switzerland as the
residents of that country.
The EHIC can be obtained free of charge either in person Office
of the National Health Service or in one of the NSA departments and will be valid for three years from
the date of issue of the card.
REMEMBER: The EHIC does not cover the cost of the patient's contributions, nor does it cover the costs of
repatriating the patient (transport back to the patient's country of residence) if the patient has a serious
illness or death. A particularly important aspect of transport could be for visitors to ski resorts, where
helicopter take-offs may be required, which, it should be noted, usually cost several thousand. Read more in our
article What's EHIC.
The best travel insurance
For us, as for many, the greatest value in choosing travel insurance is the welcoming and knowledgeable
customer
support. Of course, it is very important to evaluate the coverage of the offered insurance risks so that it
corresponds to the planned activities. These values may differ for everyone, but we think these are the two main
things to look for when choosing one policy or another. It is important to remember that the insurance terms
will
not be the same for all companies and the exceptions (in which the indemnity may be refused) may differ, so we
recommend that you read the terms or information document before purchasing the policy to avoid
misunderstandings
and unpleasant situations.
The best travel insurance is the one that best fits your trip. You can buy the most expensive one
possible policy, but it may still not include activities specific to your trip, such as one of
extreme sports or rental car excess insurance. That's why we recommend always first
make sure the travel insurance you choose fits everything you plan to do on your trip.
If your
the credit card already includes travel insurance, so check that its coverage (and terms) are appropriate
for the specific trip, even if one of your travel companions has already bought a travel policy for everyone
participants, then make sure that your activities coincide with the trip, and also check any other risks
are included in the policy. You don't have to be an insurance specialist to familiarize yourself with the
contents of the policy and call
to your insurer, so that the representative will explain to you whether the specific policy will be fully
suitable for your trip.
We have already mentioned that, in our opinion, the quality of the customer support center is one of the most
important factors
in purchasing travel insurance, so this proactive call on your part will be a good way to go about this
make sure and evaluate the customer support competence of the particular insurer and the willingness to help
you.
What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance is a type of insurance that provides the insured person with reimbursement of financial
expenses incurred
losses in various cases that may occur during the trip or before the trip. Including, but not limited to -
medical expenses, damage or theft of luggage or other personal belongings, trip interruption,
dental expenses, liability insurance or legal services.
What types of travel insurance are available?
In Latvia and also when buying insurance from companies abroad, various types of insurance are available, for
example
the simplest of them is a leisure travel policy, but other types are winter sports (skiing, snowboarding) or
other types of active leisure travel policies, foreign study or work policies, insurance for obtaining a visa.
For each of them, as well as for each insurer, the proposed travel goals and policy programs and their
inclusions
the risks will differ, so it is important to evaluate the offers of all insurers so that you can buy yours
the most suitable insurance for the trip without paying for what you do not need to include in the policy.
Does travel insurance compensate for trip cancellation?
Yes, usually travel insurance compensates for both trip cancellation (cancellation) and interruption, if
occurred before the start of the trip due to unforeseen circumstances beyond your control, including personal
ones
reasons, for example, you have lost your job due to downsizing in the company, or in cases where, for example,
it has been canceled
concert or other event for which you had planned this trip.
Covid travel insurance
Almost all Latvian insurers offer to buy Covid-19 insurance in addition to travel insurance. What is included
in
this additional coverage is different for each insurer. Not only do the risks included in the coverage differ,
but
also the amounts paid for each specific risk at the time of its occurrence. The most popular risks that are
insured with Covid coverage:
- Medical expenses
- Medical transport expenses
- Trip interruption and cancellation
- Repatriation expenses
- Travel expenses for one family member
It should be noted that no travel insurance covers the cost of taking the Covid test.
Short and Long Term Travel
Short-term travel - no longer than 45 consecutive days. Standard short-term travel insurance policies
usually cost from around 1 EUR for each
of travel
day. In recent years, some insurers have lowered the prices of standard travel policies, and one day of insured
travel can cost from 0.50 EUR.
The price of the policy will be more expensive depending on the selected program and destination.
Long-term (or Annual) - is longer than 45 days, but not longer than 365 consecutive days. The following
is usually used
type of travel policy used
for studying or working abroad, and it is also a very convenient solution,
when you know you will travel several times a year. In such cases, long-term policies are a much more
cost-effective option as
repeatedly buy a short-term policy. Standard annual travel policies usually cost from 0.10 EUR per trip
day.
The price of long-term policies also depends on the chosen program, the nature of the trip, the planned
activities and the destination.
What makes up the price of a travel insurance policy
The price of travel insurance is influenced by the information provided by you about the planned activities,
duration, territory, purpose (enjoying a lazy holiday, active recreation, studies or work abroad) and the chosen
risks against which you want to insure. For shorter trips, where you will not engage in any extreme sports and
you
will reach the destination by land transport, the policy will be much cheaper than, for example, flying to the
Alps and taking your own spot equipment with you. Always choose an insurance policy that is appropriate for your
planned activities and destination, because then you will be sure that you will receive help from your insurer
when it is needed.
Do you need to have a printed policy with you
No, the printout of the policy does not have to be with you to take advantage of it. An electronic printout of
the policy (stored on the phone or e-mail) is as valid as a paper policy. Remember that you can always call your
insurer on their 24-hour information phone and the specialists will tell you how to act in any situation, so
that
you do not lose the opportunity to be reimbursed for unforeseen costs incurred during the trip.
Travel insurance calculator
Our website is the only one that updates all information about travel and other insurance products every week.
This page compares the travel insurance programs offered by all major Latvian insurers, their limits, additional
coverage, current discounts and other important information about policy purchase. To easily compare what is
available on the market and choose the most suitable for you at the best price, use a travel insurance
calculator.
The main criterion for purchasing a policy should not be its price, but the risks involved and their relevance
to
your trip. If you are going on a business trip, then you probably do not need an Active Leisure policy and the
risks included in it, which would be necessary when going on a trip where you plan to engage in some extreme
sports, such as diving. This will save you money on your policy. However, if you are planning to go on a trip
that
will engage in one of the winter sports or other active recreation activities, then make sure that your policy
will cover the expenses that will be incurred in case of injury from sports.
Why is it worth buying travel insurance
Data provided by insurers on the most frequent occurrences with their customers during the trip show that
accidents occur and occur frequently. Minor injuries, broken bones or sudden illnesses can cost the traveler
more
than it might seem at first. The most expensive have to pay for medical transport in mountain resorts, when the
only way out for the person and the way to get to a specialist care is by helicopter transport, which can cost
several tens of thousands of euros.
The prices of standard policies are relatively low, the policy can cost around 1 EUR per day, so comparing it
with
the potential risk and potential losses, the purchase of the policy seems the most important, of course, is to
buy
a policy that suits your trip and do not overpay.
