What to do in the event of an accident
In the event of any major or minor collision, the vehicle must be stopped, the warning signal activated and an
emergency sign or triangle placed to give a signal to other drivers of the collision ahead of them. In the event
of a collision with another vehicle without injured persons, it is appropriate to keep the agreed statement in the
car or to use the agreed statement mobile
app.
Either on paper or electronically, but the procedure and rules for completing the agreed statement remain
unchanged. a customized statement may be made only if the specific accident meets the following characteristics:
mobile application
- Only 2 vehicles are involved in the accident
- Both drivers can agree on the circumstances of the accident and who's to blame
- No people have suffered
- No damage to third party property is done
- Neither of the two injured vehicles has suffered damage that would prevent them from participating in traffic.
If any of the above conditions of a traffic accident do not occur, then the accident must be reported to the
State Traffic Police.
It should be borne in mind that the agreed statement may not be amended after it has been completed. Both drivers
are entitled to one copy each. When submitting the agreed statement to the insurer, it is recommended to attach
photos from the scene as well.
What to do in case of collision with an animal
Statistics show that collisions with forest animals and also birds are occurring more and more often in Latvia.
Whether it is a wild animal or a pet, if the vehicle is involved in such a collision, it is mandatory to report
the incident to the State Road Police by calling 112. Don't worry, no one will punish you for the collision with
the animal and most likely the police will not have to wait for the scene.
Important to remember: Never take a fallen animal away from the scene! Otherwise, the hunting law would be
violated and you could be fined a considerable amount. For your own safety, you should definitely not approach a
fallen animal, because if a fallen animal is alive, it can become unpredictable in a state of shock and even
attack its rescuers.
Unfortunately, MTPL will not cover expenses incurred in the collision with an animal incurred by your car. In
such an accident, you will have to take care of the car repair and its costs yourself. Compensation for car
repairs after a collision with an animal will be reimbursed by CASCO insurance, but MTPL will not reimburse. The
exception is only if when buying a MTPL policy you have asked your insurer to include such a risk for an
additional fee or if you have bought Golden MTPL policy which is issued by Compensa insurance company.
MTPL calculator
Standard MTPL policies are the same for all insurers and they all perform the function required by law, which is
also the most important, so most drivers choose the cheapest policy without much worry about what is included in
it. The MTPL calculator calculates the MTPL price of a car for five different terms - 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months -
in a few seconds. To obtain the policy price, all you have to do is enter the vehicle registration number (eg
AA1234) and the registration certificate number (usually starting with the letters "AF", eg AF1234567).
On this page we update weekly information on MTPL prices from all Latvian insurers, so you can quickly choose the
cheapest policy for your car. Insurers often hold promotions and sometimes "silently" offer discounts for the
purchase of policies online, and we publish all this on this page once a week. When buying a policy on the website
of each insurer, you will be able to enter a discount or promotion code, so on this page you will always find
current, valid share codes so that you can buy MTPL insurance cheaper.
Execution and purchase of the policy on the Internet usually takes only a few minutes, so you can compare and
purchase MTPL insurance for your car at any time of the day. The buyer can choose the policy start date, term and
receive a printout of the new policy in e-mail immediately after payment.
What is MTPL
Compulsory motor third party liability insurance. It is mandatory for all vehicles involved in road traffic. With
MTPL, but at your own risk, in cases when you have caused damage to another person's vehicle, property or health.
With the MTPL policy, your liability limit for damages caused to a person is up to 5,210,000 EUR and for property
1,050,000 EUR. This means that within these limits, you will not have to pay from your own pocket for the damage
you have done to others.
MTPL does not cover losses incurred:
- For your vehicle and your health after a road accident or off-road accident (scratched bumper in the parking
lot, broken glass, punctured tire and the like)
- During competitions or training.
You can purchase this type of insurance for a term of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 months or until the end date of the
technical inspection. In order to participate in road traffic, MTPL insurance must be mandatory. Read more in our
section What's MTPL.
How to buy a MTPL policy cheaper
In order to buy a MTPL policy at a discount, it is necessary to purchase it online, because almost all Latvian
insurers offer additional discounts if the policy is purchased online. Typically, discounts for online purchases
range from -3% to -15%. Insurers tend to change these online discounts frequently, so we compare them every week.
In addition to insurers' discounts, the law stipulates that a 40% discount can be received for groups 1 and 2
disabled people. Group 3 disabled people can receive a discount if the person's mobility is limited. Farmers,
fishermen, agricultural workers and agricultural entrepreneurs can receive a 30% discount. Discounts are usually
not cumulated, but if you have a disability certificate or are from one of the above industries, then your
purchase will be subject to the highest possible discount 30% or 40% respectively.
We have a section on our website Discounts, which
we update every week with information on current promotions and discounts from all Latvian insurers. Not all
promotions or short-term discounts are published in the media, so often clients are not even aware of the
possibilities to buy a policy cheaper at the moment.
Check MTPL policy
Whether your new MTPL policy is valid, as well as the policy entry into force and end date can be seen in the
printout of your policy or in the e-mail sent by your insurer. If for some reason you have not received a printout
or e-mail or cannot find it, then at any time you can view information about your car's MTPL policy in the LTAB
website section Check MTPL.
To view the information, you only need to know the car registration number or chassis number, when entering the
system will immediately show the status of your MTPL policy - you will find out with which insurer it was
purchased, when it was purchased, when it expires, as well as in which countries the policy is valid.
If the end of your insurance term is no later than within the next 30 days, then you can use the MTPL calculator
to calculate the price of the new policy in time. If the term expires later than 30 or 35 days (depending on the
policy issuer's terms), then you will not be able to calculate the price of a new policy yet.
Is MTPL required if you have a CASCO policy
MTPL protects your civil liability, which ensures that you do not have to cover the losses you have caused to a
third party as a result of an accident from your own pocket. CASCO insurance does not perform such a function. If
you have CASCO and there is no MTPL at that moment, then the third party may have to pay the losses caused by the
accident. In addition, you will be penalized for the fact that your vehicle has been involved in traffic without
MTPL insurance.
As we already know, MTPL is mandatory. This is to ensure that the victim always has their money and does not have
to repair the car from their own pocket if someone has damaged it in a traffic accident. CASCO performs a
completely different function and it does not include or replace MTPL insurance, but you will learn more about it
by reading our article What's insured with
CASCO.
Remember that MTPL, or Compulsory Civil Vehicle Insurance is mandatory for every vehicle participating in road
traffic (cars and trucks, motorcycles, scooters and also trailers).
How the MTPL price is calculated
We cannot please you with a straight answer, because there is no single formula according to which your car
insurance premium (price) would be calculated. It is for this reason that the price of a policy may differ for
each of the insurers. One clear, important factor in the MTPL price is your Bonus Malus class. We explained this
in full detail in our blog post What's Bonus Malus
class.
In addition to the BM class, the following parameters can also be factors influencing the MTPL price:
- Type of vehicle you own (light, heavy, tractor, motorcycle)
- Purpose of use of the vehicle (taxi, official or security car)
- Age of the authorized user, owner of the vehicle
- Drivers' experience
- Declared place of residence
- History of claims paid in the previous insurance period.
There are definitely other factors that insurers take into account when calculating the MTPL price and they may
differ for each insurer. Only a specialist of the particular insurance company can tell you exactly, because such
information is not public. To learn about each of the influencing factors in a little more detail, read the
article How MTPL premium is
calculated.
What is a Green card
A green card is an internationally valid insurance contract that certifies that your car has valid compulsory
liability insurance when you are abroad. It is required for road traffic (traveling through or just crossing the
country) in Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Israel, Russia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Morocco,
Moldova, Albania, Belarus, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine.
The green card can be valid for a period of 15 to 365 days (choose this depending on the duration of your trip).
If you do not plan to go to or through any of the above countries, then you do not need a Green Card. Your

Republic, Denmark, France, Greece, Croatia, Estonia, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Cyprus, Great Britain, Lithuania,
Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, the Netherlands , Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia,
